The Trojan Pinata

The team has been working on an idea to add an exciting and interactive element to the March to give members of the community a chance to make their voices heard.

A Trojan Piñata Sculpture

We need to get people to WANT to be involved. Not everyone is going to be able to do a 12 day march, but they might be able to join one of the community touch points where they can see our Trojan Piñata up close. Members of the community will have a chance to add their own touch to it. A name, a message, as long as it keeps with the spirit of non-violence and inclusivity.

The vision is this - the sculpture will be approximately 12’ tall, something to catch the eye (but hopefully not the underside of a bridge). The marchers will bring colorful paper and paint to let anyone who wants to add to the Trojan Pinata get creative. It’s a fun way to collect the hopes and wishes of all of our neighbors as we march down to DC.

We want to hit a wide variety of community locations - schools, shelters, community centers, and places of worship - because we ALL care about our democracy. Our differences make a beautiful tapestry in America and that is something we need to protect and celebrate.

Behind the scenes

Here’s a peek at the initial sketch of the wooden frame to support the Trojan Piñata.

Why a Trojan Horse?

Donald Trump recently toured the Middle East, soliciting bribes from countries looking to get into his good graces after some of them were involved in heinous crimes against human rights and against Americans specifically. (So, we shouldn’t be taking bribes from them). The luxury jet from Qatar is one such example of a gift for Trump’s personal use that is blatantly in violation of the constitution’s emoluments clause. Republicans can try to explain it away, but I think it’s pretty obvious to most people that this is blatantly illegal.

Why does it look like a piñata?

1 - We need to keep Trump’s laser focus on tormenting our Latino neighbors and friends in our sights. Trump is still ignoring a unanimous Supreme Court order to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia, along with the others deported without due process, back to the US to go through the court system as our constitution very plainly requires.

2 - the fun colors of a piñata are eye-catching and inviting. We want this to be FUN and inviting! We want more people to be curious to get a closer look so that they can make their voices heard.

3 - the fun colors also lend themselves to very easily incorporate the LGBTQ+ community, which has also been a target of recent Trump executive orders aimed at making people as uncomfortable as possible

Why does it have a pilot hat?

We want to keep this Qatari plane front of mind too. People have heard this story and they know instinctively that this is wrong. We need to keep each other sane by reminding ourselves that these actions ARE NOT NORMAL. And what better way to keep our sanity than with a visual joke?

This is going to be the best part of the march, Jaxy. Brilliant!
